5 Hidden Gems in Western Sicily
Beyond Palermo and the temples of Agrigento, western Sicily holds secrets that most visitors never discover.
Western Sicily moves at a different pace. The Arab-Norman influences run deeper, the coastline is wilder, and the tourists are fewer. Here are five places worth the detour.
1. Erice
A medieval hilltop town wrapped in clouds more often than not. The Norman castle at its peak offers views across the salt flats of Trapani to the Egadi Islands. The almond pastries from Maria Grammatico's shop are famous throughout Italy. The drive from Trapani takes 30 minutes via hairpin bends -- best enjoyed from the back seat.
2. Marsala
Known for its fortified wine, Marsala's historic centre is a grid of baroque streets around the Piazza della Repubblica. Visit the Florio cellars for a private tasting, then drive 15 minutes south to the Stagnone lagoon where Phoenician ruins sit in shallow turquoise water.
3. Selinunte
The largest archaeological park in Europe sprawls across a coastal plateau. Unlike Agrigento, you can walk among the columns without barriers. The eastern temples are partially reconstructed; the western acropolis is romantically ruined. Allow three hours.
4. Scala dei Turchi
A natural staircase of white marl clay descending into the sea near Agrigento. Best visited at sunset when the rock glows amber. Swimming is permitted at the base. Your chauffeur knows the unmarked parking area that avoids the tourist lot.
5. Mothia (San Pantaleo)
A tiny island in the Stagnone lagoon, reachable by a five-minute boat from the salt road. The Whitaker Museum houses the Giovane di Mozia -- a fifth-century BC marble statue discovered here in 1979. One of Sicily's most remarkable artefacts in one of its smallest museums.
How to Explore
Western Sicily rewards a full-day hourly chauffeur booking. The distances between these five sites range from 30 to 90 minutes, and the roads -- while scenic -- require local knowledge. Your GIORIZZ chauffeur plans the route to match your pace.
