Hong Kong International Races 2026: A Ground Logistics Guide
Hong Kong International Races, Sha Tin, 13 December 2026: airport and private jet arrivals, race-day access, drive times and where to base yourself.
On Sunday 13 December 2026, Sha Tin Racecourse stages the Longines Hong Kong International Races: four Group 1 contests on a single card. The racecourse sits in the New Territories, a harbour tunnel and a range of hills away from the hotels where most visitors stay, so the quality of the day depends on how the journeys are planned as much as on where you are seated.
The event at a glance
The Hong Kong Jockey Club fixture list for the 2026/27 season places the meeting on Sunday 13 December 2026 at Sha Tin, as a daytime turf card. Four international Group 1 races anchor it: the Hong Kong Sprint (1,200 m), the Hong Kong Mile (1,600 m), the Hong Kong Cup (2,000 m) and the Hong Kong Vase (2,400 m).
Race week begins earlier. The same fixture list shows a night meeting at Happy Valley on Wednesday 9 December, the slot that traditionally hosts the Longines International Jockeys' Championship; in 2025 that evening brought twelve jockeys together over four races. The Club's event pages had not yet detailed the 2026 Wednesday programme at the time of writing, so verify with the organiser.
Two references from 2025 help with planning. The Club listed a provisional event start of 11:10 and a first race at 12:25 for the Sunday, while the Wednesday at Happy Valley started at 16:45 with a first race at 18:30. The Sunday meeting also drew 13,300 visiting spectators, which the Club reported as a record for a single race day. Entry to both racecourses is restricted to guests aged 18 or over.
Arriving: airports and private aviation
Commercial flights use Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) at Chek Lap Kok, on Lantau. For hotels on Hong Kong Island, the Four Seasons in Central gives about 45 minutes by car for the roughly 40 km from the airport, and the Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in 24 minutes. For Sha Tin, Route 8 runs as one continuous road from the airport across the Lantau Link and Stonecutters Bridge, then through the Eagle's Nest and Sha Tin Heights tunnels to Sha Tin town centre; a Chinese University of Hong Kong listing puts the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin about 30 minutes from the airport by car. Treat both figures as clear-road times and allow more on a weekday evening.
Private aircraft are handled by the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre (HKBAC), which has operated at the airport since 1998 and is its only business aviation FBO. According to the OPSGROUP 2026 guide to Hong Kong:
- Capacity has roughly doubled after the terminal expansion, with upgraded customs and immigration facilities.
- Slots are easier to obtain since the three-runway system became fully operational, but they still have to be booked: runway slots through the Hong Kong Schedule Coordination Office, parking through the Airport Authority, and the landing permit through the Civil Aviation Department.
- Advance passenger information is mandatory for every passenger and crew member on inbound flights, and must be filed by the operator or its trip support provider, not by the FBO.
- Aircraft may be parked on remote bays, with a van transfer of about 10 to 15 minutes to the terminal. Build that into the meeting time agreed with your chauffeur.
Getting around during the event
Sha Tin is served by its own Racecourse station on the East Rail line, open on race days only, with footbridges straight to the grandstand; Fo Tan station (Exit C) is about 15 minutes away on foot. A chauffeured car earns its place for the parts the railway does not cover: a door-to-door arrival in race-day dress, the transfer to an evening engagement afterwards, and a vehicle that is yours for the day.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board lists three set-down points at Sha Tin: the Public Admission Gate near Entrance 1, the Public Stand near Entrance 7, and the first floor of the Multi-Level Carpark. The members' car park is reserved for members and their guests. Police notices for past Sha Tin meetings applied special traffic arrangements from two hours before the first race until the crowd had dispersed, and limited racecourse parking to vehicles holding a Jockey Club permit. The notice for 13 December 2026 has not been published; verify with the organiser which set-down point applies to a private hire car and to your enclosure.
No official race-day drive time is published. As a planning allowance, not a quoted time, give the outbound run from Central or Tsim Sha Tsui 40 to 60 minutes in the late morning, and expect the return to be slower in the hour after the last race, when most of the crowd leaves together. There are two sound ways to handle it: leave before the final race, or stay on course for about an hour and travel once the roads have cleared. In both cases agree a precise pick-up point and a fallback beforehand, because kerbside waiting is controlled.
The Wednesday at Happy Valley is simpler. The racecourse is on Hong Kong Island, close to the hotels of Central, Admiralty and Causeway Bay, although weekday evening traffic applies. Causeway Bay station, Exit A, is about 20 minutes away on foot.
Where the city concentrates
Most international visitors choose between three bases.
- Central and Admiralty. The financial district, with the Mandarin Oriental and the Four Seasons, the latter connected to the IFC mall and a short walk from the Airport Express station. It is the natural base for the Wednesday at Happy Valley and for dinners on the Island.
- Tsim Sha Tsui. The Kowloon waterfront, home of The Peninsula. It sits on the Sha Tin side of the harbour, which removes one tunnel crossing from the Sunday journey.
- Sha Tin. The Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin stands next to University station and, according to the same university listing, about five minutes by road from the racecourse. The trade-off is distance from the Island in the evenings.
A sample day
Sunday 13 December, built on the 2025 timings. Confirm the 2026 schedule before fixing it.
- 08:00 Breakfast at the hotel. Check passports, badges and the entrance printed on your booking.
- 09:45 Departure from Central or Tsim Sha Tsui, ahead of the main outbound flow.
- 10:45 Set-down at Sha Tin. In 2025 the event opened at 11:10.
- 12:25 First race (2025 provisional time). The four Group 1 races are spread through the afternoon card.
- Mid-afternoon A short message to your chauffeur: early exit or late hold.
- After the last race Either you are already on the road, or you stay about an hour before the car is called to the agreed point.
- 20:30 Dinner on the Island or in Kowloon, with the car kept on an hourly basis.
- 24:00 Return to the hotel.
Booking windows and what to confirm
- Aircraft. Request slots, parking and the landing permit as soon as dates are fixed. If the trip continues into mainland China, the OPSGROUP guide advises allowing 7 to 10 days for permits, longer around public holidays.
- Racecourse access. Enclosures, restaurants and hospitality are booked through the Jockey Club's own system. Verify with the organiser the arrangements for overseas visitors, the documents required at the gate and the dress code for the area you have booked.
- Ground transport. Reserve car and chauffeur for the Wednesday evening and the whole of Sunday at disposal, not as separate transfers. A vehicle on an hourly basis absorbs a late finish without renegotiation.
- To verify close to the date. The 2026 race times and gate opening, the police traffic notice, and the pick-up point assigned to your enclosure.
