La Scala Opening Night 2026 in Milan: A Ground Logistics Guide

La Scala opens with Verdi's Otello on 7 December 2026: Milan airports, private aviation, the Piazza della Scala closures and how to time your arrival.

On Monday 7 December 2026, the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, Teatro alla Scala opens its 2026/27 season with Verdi's Otello, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung and directed by Damiano Michieletto. It is one evening, one building and one square, and for most of the day the streets around that square are closed to traffic. Whether the night runs smoothly depends less on where you sit than on how you reach the door, and how you leave it.

The event at a glance

The Prima, as Milan calls it, has been held on 7 December, the day of the city's patron saint, since 1951. The essentials for 2026:

  • Date and time: Monday 7 December 2026, curtain at 18:00.
  • Venue: Teatro alla Scala, Piazza della Scala, in the historic centre of Milan.
  • Production: a new staging of Verdi's Otello. Myung-Whun Chung conducts in his first season as the theatre's music director; Damiano Michieletto directs. The announced opening-night cast is led by Brian Jagde (Otello), Eleonora Buratto (Desdemona) and Luca Salsi (Iago).
  • Other dates: the Under-30 preview is on Friday 4 December at 18:00. Further performances are announced for 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 29 December and 2 and 5 January, all at 20:00.
  • Broadcast: the season presentation announced live coverage on RAI1 from 17:45, fifty years after the first televised opening night.

Ticket sales follow a staggered calendar. Italian opera press reported sales for the opening night starting on 7 October and for the later performances on 14 October; verify the current availability and conditions with the theatre's box office.

Arriving: airports and private aviation

Milan is served by three airports, in three different directions, and the choice sets the tone of the arrival.

  • Linate (LIN) is the city airport, about 8 km east of the centre. Allow 20 to 30 minutes by private car off-peak and 35 to 50 minutes at rush hour.
  • Malpensa (MXP) is the intercontinental hub, about 50 km to the north-west. Allow 50 to 70 minutes, and a further 20 to 30 minutes when the motorway is congested.
  • Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is about 45 km to the north-east along the A4. Allow 50 to 70 minutes, with a similar margin at peak times.

For private aviation, both Linate and Malpensa have dedicated business aviation terminals operating under the Milano Prime name. Slot availability, handling and parking for the long weekend should be confirmed with your operator well in advance.

One point is specific to this date. Sant'Ambrogio is a local holiday in Milan and 8 December is a national holiday, so in 2026 the opening falls inside a four-day weekend from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December. Commuter traffic on the Monday is lighter than usual, but expect leisure traffic on the motorways around Milan at the start and end of the break, and plan the departure on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning with a generous margin.

Getting around during the event

The reference is the traffic order issued by the Comune di Milano for the 2025 opening. On that occasion Piazza della Scala, Via Manzoni, Via Case Rotte, Via Verdi, Via Filodrammatici, Via San Dalmazio, Piazza Paolo Ferrari and the adjoining stretch of Via Santa Margherita were closed to traffic from 13:00 until midnight, with parking bans on the same streets and their surroundings from 07:00. As reported at the time, the order allowed exemptions for residents, emergency vehicles, disabled drivers and licensed chauffeur vehicles setting down or collecting passengers. The 2026 order had not been published at the time of writing: verify with the organiser and the Comune in the days before the event, and do not assume that last year's exemptions or timings apply.

In practice:

  • Aim to be at the set-down point by 17:15. Guests begin arriving around 17:00, access to the square is controlled, and the foyer is part of the evening.
  • Agree the pick-up before the curtain rises. A car waiting at the door is not something to count on. Fix a precise meeting point just outside the closed streets, and a time window based on the running time the theatre communicates.
  • Check the access zones. Area C, the congestion zone covering the historic centre, is reported as active Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30, and the fashion district has its own limited traffic zone reported as active at all hours. How these apply on the holiday, and to your vehicle, is a point to verify with the Comune di Milano or with your hotel, which normally arranges access for arriving guests.

Where the city concentrates

Everything that matters on the evening sits within a short radius of the theatre. Several of the city's historic hotels are within walking distance: the Grand Hotel et de Milan on Via Manzoni, where Verdi lived and died; the Park Hyatt Milano beside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II; the Mandarin Oriental on Via Andegari; the Four Seasons on Via Gesù; the Bulgari Hotel on Via Privata Fratelli Gabba; and Portrait Milano on Corso Venezia. The Principe di Savoia, on Piazza della Repubblica, is a short drive to the north. If your hotel stands on or near one of the closed streets, ask the concierge how arrivals and departures are handled on the day.

Around the opera, three things shape the city:

  • The gala dinner. The official dinner after the performance is by invitation; in 2025 it was held at the Società del Giardino.
  • Prima Diffusa. In past editions the city has run a programme of live screenings and related events across its neighbourhoods. Verify the 2026 programme with the Comune di Milano.
  • The Oh Bej! Oh Bej! fair. The traditional Sant'Ambrogio market takes place around the Castello Sforzesco; in 2025 it ran from 5 to 8 December. Verify the 2026 dates, and expect slow traffic around the castle while it is open.

A sample day

A realistic 7 December for a guest staying in the centre:

  • 08:00 Breakfast at the hotel. Your chauffeur confirms the published traffic order and the set-down point.
  • 10:00 A morning on foot: the Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio is at the heart of the patron saint's day.
  • 12:30 Lunch close to the hotel. If the 2025 pattern is repeated, the streets around the theatre close at 13:00.
  • 15:30 Back at the hotel to dress.
  • 16:45 Departure by car, or on foot if the hotel is within a few minutes of the square.
  • 17:15 Set-down at the edge of the perimeter, access checks, foyer.
  • 18:00 Curtain.
  • Late evening Final curtain and applause. Walk to the agreed meeting point and drive to dinner.
  • 24:00 Return to the hotel. In 2025 the closures ran until midnight.

Booking windows and what to confirm

  • Now: theatre tickets and hotel. The holiday weekend compresses availability across the centre.
  • As soon as flights are fixed: airport transfers and a chauffeur at disposal for the evening. An hourly arrangement suits this night better than two separate transfers, because the end time is not fixed.
  • Private aviation: slots, handling and aircraft parking, with your operator.
  • Two to three weeks ahead: the post-opera dinner reservation, with a late arrival time.
  • In the final week: the 2026 traffic order, the exact set-down and pick-up points, the expected end time and the dress code, traditionally formal on opening night. Verify each with the organiser.
