Catania Airport to Milazzo Port: Timing the Aeolian Ferry
How long the drive from Catania Airport to Milazzo port takes, where the car stops, and how much margin to leave before a hydrofoil to the Aeolian Islands.
The drive from Catania Airport to the port of Milazzo covers roughly 145 km and takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by private car in normal traffic. The crossing to the Aeolian Islands is the fixed point of the day, so the safest plan is to choose the sailing first and work backwards, leaving a real margin at the port.
At a glance
- Driving time: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in normal traffic, more with this autumn's roadworks.
- Crossing: about one hour to Lipari by direct hydrofoil, about two hours by ferry, longer for the outer islands.
- Where the car stops: at the hydrofoil terminal on Via Luigi Rizzo for Liberty Lines, or on the Via dei Mille side for Siremar ferries.
- Book in advance: the crossing, for a specific departure, and the car timed to it.
- Key rule: Liberty Lines asks passengers to be at the port at least 15 minutes before departure and includes one piece of hand luggage of up to 10 kg.
- When to avoid a same-day connection: late afternoon landings outside summer, and days of rough sea.
The road from Catania Airport to Milazzo
From the airport the car joins the A18 motorway and follows the Ionian coast north, past Taormina, as far as Messina. There it continues on the A20 in the direction of Palermo and leaves at the Milazzo exit, which is also signed for the Aeolian Islands. A private transfer to the port of Milazzo covers the whole distance without a change of vehicle.
Published estimates range from about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. With a boat to catch, plan beyond the upper end.
This autumn there is a specific reason for caution. Under orders issued by Autostrade Siciliane, the operator of both motorways, one carriageway of the A18 is closed in the tunnel section near Scaletta Zanclea, south of Messina, with two-way traffic on the other carriageway until 28 November. Lane closures for barrier repairs are authorised along the whole A18 until 28 March 2027, and further partial closures affect both the A18 and the A20 until the end of December. Our note on the A18 motorway works describes the measures. Such orders are often amended: verify with the operator close to the date.
Hydrofoil or ferry: what leaves from Milazzo
Two kinds of vessel connect Milazzo with the islands. Liberty Lines operates the hydrofoils, which carry passengers only. Siremar operates conventional ferries, which are slower and also carry vehicles.
To Lipari, the direct hydrofoil takes about one hour, with listed crossings between roughly 50 minutes and 1 hour 5 minutes, and noticeably longer when the vessel calls at other islands first. The ferry takes about two hours. Vulcano is the closest island. Salina, Panarea and Stromboli take longer, and Filicudi and Alicudi are the furthest, with fewer sailings each day.
The route runs all year, but with fewer sailings in the low season, broadly from October to May. The point to check is the last departure of the day. In the summer timetable that Liberty Lines published from 8 June, the last hydrofoil left Milazzo at 19:30. On the day we checked in early October, the sailings to Lipari listed on booking platforms ended in the late afternoon, at around 17:15. Timetables change during the year: verify with the operator for your exact date.
Working backwards from the sailing
Take the departure time from Milazzo and subtract the time at the port, the drive, and the time needed to collect baggage and reach the car. As a planning rule, we suggest a sailing that leaves at least four hours after the scheduled landing time, and more while the roadworks described above are in place.
Outside summer, this rules out many afternoon flights. If the margin before the last crossing is shorter, the calmer choice is to spend the first night on the mainland and cross on a morning sailing.
The same logic applies in reverse before a flight from Catania Airport: choose a sailing that reaches Milazzo with a wide margin.
At the port: where the car stops
Milazzo does not have a single embarkation point. According to Liberty Lines, its ticket office is on Via Luigi Rizzo, at the new hydrofoil terminal, and is open every day from 05:30 to 19:30 (verify with the operator). Siremar has its ticket office on Via dei Mille, and the ferries leave from that side of the harbour.
The two points are not interchangeable with luggage and a boat about to leave. When booking the car, state the operator and the type of vessel, not only "the port". The chauffeur can then stop on the correct side, as close to the terminal as traffic arrangements allow.
Liberty Lines asks passengers to be at the port at least 15 minutes before departure, with a valid ticket and a photo ID, and to complete check-in with the ground staff. Tickets are valid only for the departure printed on them. Passengers who need assistance for reduced mobility should request it from the operator at least 48 hours before departure and check in at least 30 minutes before. In summer and at weekends the quay is crowded, and it is worth arriving well before the minimum.
Luggage on the hydrofoil
Liberty Lines includes one piece of hand luggage per passenger, up to 10 kg and 60 x 40 x 20 cm. Each additional piece requires a separate baggage ticket. The operator also states that its fleet has no dedicated baggage storage. In practice, arrange the baggage tickets for large suitcases together with the crossing, not at the gangway. For the ferries, booking platforms indicate one piece of luggage per passenger: verify with the operator.
If the sea or the volcano changes the plan
Hydrofoils are more exposed to rough sea than ferries, and sailings are suspended more often between autumn and spring. Liberty Lines publishes notices of suspended sailings and live departure information on its website. Check them on the morning of travel. When a hydrofoil is suspended, a later ferry may still sail, more slowly.
On the flight side, ash from Etna closed Catania Airport several times this summer and in September. If the flight is diverted to another Sicilian airport, the booked sailing may be out of reach. Our guide to Etna ash and Catania Airport closures explains how diversions work.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Catania Airport to Milazzo port?
By private car, approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in normal traffic, for roughly 145 km on the A18 and A20 motorways. Allow more while the current roadworks are in place.
How much time should I leave between landing and the hydrofoil?
As a planning rule, at least four hours between the scheduled landing time and the departure from Milazzo. This covers baggage reclaim, the drive and check-in at the port.
Where do the hydrofoils leave from in Milazzo?
From the hydrofoil terminal on Via Luigi Rizzo, where Liberty Lines has its ticket office. Siremar ferries use the Via dei Mille side of the harbour.
What happens if the hydrofoil is suspended for bad weather?
The operator publishes suspended sailings on its website. A ferry may still operate when hydrofoils do not. For rebooking and refunds, verify with the operator.
Can I take a car to the Aeolian Islands?
Hydrofoils carry passengers only. Ferries carry vehicles, but booking platforms report summer restrictions on visitors' vehicles on Lipari. Verify with the operator and the municipality of the island before booking.
