Arriving in Ortigia by Car: ZTL, Bridges and Hotel Drop-off
Arriving in Ortigia by car: how the ZTL gates at the two bridges work, where a car can stop for your hotel and how to time the drive from Catania Airport.
Ortigia, the small island that holds the old town of Syracuse, is the part of the arrival that takes planning. The drive itself is one of the simplest in Sicily: a private transfer from Catania Airport to Syracuse runs almost entirely on a short motorway. What matters is the last kilometre: Ortigia is reached across two bridges and protected by a limited traffic zone whose hours change with the season. This guide covers the route, the ZTL and how an arrival actually works at the door of your hotel.
The route in brief
From Fontanarossa the car joins the Catania bypass, the RA15 that locals simply call the tangenziale, and then the Catania–Siracusa motorway, which is part of the European route E45. The motorway itself is short, about 25 kilometres, and was opened in two stages in 2009. It is toll-free. On the way it passes the Lentini–Carlentini exit, where the road towards Ragusa branches off, and it ends on the national road that leads down into Syracuse.
Door to door, the distance from the terminal to Syracuse is approximately 65 kilometres. In normal traffic the drive takes about 50 to 60 minutes. Allow a little more if your destination is on Ortigia, and on weekday mornings, when the Catania bypass carries commuter traffic.
Timing your arrival and departure
On arrival, the variable is rarely the road. It is the time between touchdown and the kerb: baggage delivery, and passport control if you are arriving from outside the Schengen area. A chauffeur who tracks the flight works from the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, so a delay does not need to be managed by you.
For the return, work backwards from the check-in time recommended by your airline, add the drive, and then add a margin. Three things justify that margin:
- The walk to the car. If your hotel sits in a pedestrian part of Ortigia, the car may be waiting a few minutes away on foot.
- The bypass. The final stretch around Catania is the only part of the route where traffic regularly builds.
- Etna. Volcanic ash can suspend operations at Catania Airport at short notice, as happened in late September. Check the status of your flight with the airline before you leave the hotel.
If your itinerary starts on the other side of the island, the same logic applies with longer distances; our pages on Catania Airport and the Catania Airport to Syracuse transfer describe how we handle each case.
Ortigia and the ZTL
Ortigia is connected to the mainland by two bridges, the Ponte Umbertino and the Ponte Santa Lucia. The electronic gates of the ZTL, the zona a traffico limitato, stand just beyond them, and cameras read the number plate of every vehicle that enters during restricted hours.
The hours are set by the Comune di Siracusa and they are seasonal. In recent years a wider schedule has applied from spring until mid-October, with a different one for the colder months and the changeover falling around 16 October. The rules have also been rewritten more than once: in May 2025, for example, the municipality extended the weekday restrictions to cover the late morning and early afternoon as well as the evening, and redrew the pedestrian area around Piazza Pancali at the entrance to the island.
The practical conclusion is simple. Do not rely on a schedule you read last year. Verify the hours in force with the Comune di Siracusa or with your hotel before travel.
If you are staying on the island, your accommodation can normally register the number plate of the vehicle that brings you, so that it may transit to reach the property. This has to be requested in advance, and transit is not the same as permission to park. Confirm the procedure with your hotel when you book.
Where the car can leave you
Hotels on Ortigia
Ortigia has places to stay of every scale, from larger houses such as the Grand Hotel Ortigia to small palazzo residences with a handful of rooms. What matters for the transfer is the exact address. Some properties stand on the wider streets along the perimeter of the island, where a saloon can stop at the entrance. Others are in lanes of the old town that are pedestrian, or simply too narrow for any car.
In the second case the chauffeur stops at the closest permitted point and the last stretch is on foot. Ask your hotel in advance whether it offers a porter service for luggage, and share the answer with whoever is driving you.
Mainland Syracuse and the coast
Hotels on the mainland side of the city, including those near the Neapolis archaeological park, raise no ZTL question at all. For country resorts and private villas outside the city, send a map pin as well as the postal address: rural addresses in this part of Sicily are often imprecise, and a pin removes any doubt.
If you keep a car of your own
Travellers who arrive by chauffeur and then rent a car locally should know the car park most used for Ortigia: Molo Sant'Antonio, at the entrance to the island. The Talete car park has been reserved for residents under the new parking plan; verify with the Comune. The city also runs park-and-ride areas on the mainland, at Via Elorina and Von Platen, linked to the historic centre by shuttles; check current operation before relying on them.
Extending the drive
Because the motorway is short, the transfer combines well with a stop. Catania itself is a short drive from the airport, and its Baroque centre works as a first lunch in Sicily before continuing south. In the other direction, Syracuse is the natural base for Noto and the Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, which lie further south along the same corridor.
For days like these a point-to-point transfer is the wrong tool. An hourly chauffeur keeps the car and the luggage with you between stops, and a private tour is built on request around what you want to see rather than on a fixed departure.
For planners and concierges
When the booking is made on behalf of a guest, a complete brief avoids every common problem on this route:
- flight number and date, so the arrival can be tracked;
- number of passengers and pieces of luggage, including anything oversized;
- the exact address of the property and, for Ortigia, whether the hotel will register the vehicle for ZTL transit;
- any mobility requirement that makes the last stretch on foot unsuitable.
