Taormina ZTL (2026): How Hotel Guests Arrive by Car
Taormina's Corso is closed to cars. Where a car can stop for your hotel, which gates and barriers matter, and what to confirm before you arrive.
Hotel guests reach Taormina by car without difficulty, but rarely to the door. Corso Umberto, the main street between Porta Messina and Porta Catania, is pedestrian, and the streets that feed it are closed by barriers. In practice the car stops at one of a few points on the edge of the old town, and the last stretch is on foot or arranged by the hotel.
Many online guides describe a camera-enforced ZTL, or limited traffic zone, that runs around the clock. The local press tells a more cautious story. This guide sets out what is confirmed and how to plan an arrival with a private chauffeur in Taormina or in your own car.
At a glance
- Drive from Catania Airport: approximately 65 kilometres, about one hour in normal traffic, longer while roadworks continue on the A18.
- Corso Umberto is pedestrian: no car drives along it to a hotel door.
- Where the car stops: usually near Porta Catania, near Porta Messina and Piazza San Pancrazio, or at the hotel entrance if the hotel stands on a road open to traffic.
- What to arrange in advance: ask the hotel for its exact drop-off point, whether it needs the plate number of the vehicle, and how luggage is handled.
- Key rule: the barriers at Via Timeo and Via Damiano Rosso open only to registered vehicles.
- When to avoid arriving: evenings in high summer, when the roads up to the town are at their slowest.
Is there a ZTL in Taormina in 2026?
A limited traffic zone for the historic centre has been discussed since 2011. Three electronic gates were installed in 2022: at the Arco dei Cappuccini, at Via Dionisio and at the roundabout by the Porta Catania car park. According to the local news site SikilyNews, which returned to the subject in September 2025, the system had still not been activated at that date, although the municipality kept renewing the contracts that keep it ready.
At the time of writing, in October 2026, we have found no official announcement that the gates have been switched on. Because the equipment is in place, the situation can change at short notice. Treat any gate with a camera as live, and verify the current rules with your hotel or with the Polizia Locale of Taormina before driving in.
What is not in doubt is the pedestrian core. Corso Umberto is closed to traffic, and the two streets that feed it, Via Timeo and Via Damiano Rosso, are controlled by electronic barriers. Since 1 December 2024 the municipality has required residents and the owners of garages or parking spaces inside the area to register with the Polizia Locale, with a phone app replacing the old remote controls, as reported by Gazzetta del Sud. Goods vehicles are admitted to the Corso only in an early morning window, reported as 4:00 to 8:15.
Where a car can stop for your hotel
Everything depends on the address.
Hotels on roads open to traffic
Via Roma, Via Bagnoli Croci, Via Luigi Pirandello and Viale San Pancrazio are ordinary roads, as is the Circonvallazione, the provincial road SP10 that bypasses the centre and continues up to Castelmola. A hotel on one of these roads can normally be reached at its entrance. The roads are narrow and space to stop is short, so the handover is brisk.
Hotels on or just off Corso Umberto
Here the car stops at the edge. For the southern end of the Corso, the Duomo side, the natural point is Porta Catania, beside the multi-storey car park on Via Crocefisso. For the northern end it is the Porta Messina side, around Piazza San Pancrazio. From either gate the walk along the Corso is not short with luggage.
Ask the hotel in advance whether it sends a porter or a small luggage vehicle to the gate. This is the detail that most changes the arrival.
Hotels behind the barriers
Some properties stand on streets reached through the Via Timeo or Via Damiano Rosso barriers. Access there is for registered vehicles. The plans published over the years for the wider ZTL have consistently provided for time-limited passes for guests staying inside the zone, with the hotel communicating the plate number. Whether and how your hotel can authorise a car today is a question only the hotel can answer: ask for the reply in writing.
Timing the arrival from Catania Airport
The drive from Fontanarossa follows the A18 motorway towards Messina as far as the Taormina exit: approximately 65 kilometres and about one hour in normal traffic. Our page on transfers from Catania Airport to Taormina covers the route, and our note on the current roadworks on the A18 explains why journey times are less predictable this autumn.
In our experience the motorway is rarely where an arrival is lost. The slow part is the last few kilometres: the climb from the exit, and the wait for a place to stop at the gate. In past summers the local press has described drives of a few minutes inside the town stretching towards an hour. For an evening arrival in season, we suggest giving the hotel the expected time at the gate, not the landing time, so that whoever meets the luggage is there when the car is.
Vehicle size matters too. Where the street of the hotel is tight, it is usually better for a long saloon or a van to stop a short walk away than to block the road while bags are unloaded.
If you are driving yourself
Two public car parks serve the centre, both managed by ASM Taormina and both listed as open 24 hours a day. Porta Catania, on Via Crocefisso, is a short walk from the southern gate of the Corso. Lumbi, on Via Mario e Nicola Garipoli at the entrance to the town, is linked by shuttle to Piazza San Pancrazio, about 30 metres from Porta Messina. ASM lists departures every 15 minutes from 6:30 until shortly before 1:00 at night, later on Saturdays: verify with the operator before relying on the last run.
Travellers on the Tripadvisor forum report that following the signs for the Porta Catania car park keeps a driver clear of the restricted streets, and that street parking in the centre is reserved for residents.
What to confirm with your hotel before you travel
- The exact point where a car can stop, and whether it differs for a van.
- Whether the hotel lies behind a barrier or a camera gate, and whether it needs the plate number.
- Whether a porter or luggage vehicle meets guests at the gate.
- For the departure: where the car should wait, and how early luggage should come down.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a ZTL in Taormina?
Corso Umberto is pedestrian and the adjoining streets are closed by barriers. A wider ZTL with three camera gates has been installed but, according to local press reports up to September 2025, had not been activated. Verify the current position with your hotel before you travel.
Can a car drop me at the door of my hotel?
Only if the hotel stands on a road open to traffic. For hotels on or near the Corso, the car stops near Porta Catania or Porta Messina and the hotel advises on the last stretch.
Is it better to arrive at Porta Catania or Porta Messina?
It depends on the address. Porta Catania serves the southern end of the Corso, near the Duomo. Porta Messina serves the northern end.
Where do I park if I keep a hire car?
In the Porta Catania or Lumbi car parks, unless your hotel has its own spaces.
