Trapani Airport Guide (2026): Arrivals, Road Rules, Drive Times
Trapani-Birgi in practice: where your chauffeur meets you, what ENAC ordinance 02/2025 TPS means at the kerb, and drive times to Marsala, Erice and the port.
Trapani-Birgi "Vincenzo Florio" Airport is the closest gateway to Marsala, Trapani, Erice and the Egadi Islands. The airport operator lists both Trapani and Marsala at around 15 km, so a private transfer to either usually takes 20 to 35 minutes in normal traffic. What matters on arrival is where you meet your chauffeur, how the regulated lanes in front of the terminal work and how much margin to leave before a ferry.
At a glance
- The terminal is compact: car rental desks and the Lost and Found office are in the arrivals area.
- Landside traffic is regulated by ENAC ordinance 02/2025 TPS, in force since 5 December 2025.
- The lane directly facing the terminal is a limited traffic zone for authorised vehicles only.
- Licensed chauffeur (NCC) vehicles wait in reserved stalls inside the P1 car park, in front of the terminal, according to the airport operator Airgest.
- Indicative drive times: Marsala 20 to 25 minutes, Trapani port 25 to 35 minutes, Erice 40 to 50 minutes, Palermo 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes.
Arriving at Trapani-Birgi: the terminal in brief
Trapani-Birgi is managed by Airgest. Compared with Catania or Palermo it is small, which is good news after a flight: the walk from baggage reclaim to the exit is short. According to the airport's 2026 service charter, the arrivals area hosts the car rental desks and the Lost and Found office, while the information office, check-in and a first aid post are on the ground floor. If a bag does not appear, file the report at Lost and Found before leaving the arrivals area, with your boarding pass and baggage tag.
The terminal is also being upgraded. A works plan presented by the Sicilian Region in January 2026 includes the renovation of the non-Schengen arrivals area, check-in and security, with most works scheduled between June and the end of 2026. Signage may change while work is under way, so follow the exit signs rather than your memory of a previous trip.

The 2026 road rules: ENAC ordinance 02/2025 TPS
Traffic on the airport's internal roads is governed by ENAC ordinance 02/2025 TPS, dated 4 December 2025 and issued by ENAC's Western Sicily directorate. It entered into force at 00:00 on 5 December 2025 and replaced the previous ordinance from 2017. The points that matter to arriving passengers:
- Article 6 makes the right-hand lane facing the terminal a limited traffic zone (ZTL) reserved for authorised vehicles, and access violations can be detected electronically.
- Article 8 sets access to the P1 car park by ticket, with a stay of up to one hour before the airport operator's tariffs apply.
- Parking outside marked spaces or in reserved stalls is not allowed, and vehicles can be removed at the owner's expense.
The operator's landside page adds detail that the ordinance itself does not contain. Entry and exit are controlled by barriers with number-plate cameras, private cars and NCC vehicles use the left-hand lane, and a Kiss and Fly area in front of the terminal is for dropping off departing passengers. NCC vehicles wait in a reserved area inside P1, reached by a dedicated pedestrian path. Rules can change during the year, so verify with the airport operator before planning a pick-up of your own.
Where your chauffeur meets you
The meeting point at Trapani-Birgi is straightforward once you know the layout. Your chauffeur waits at the arrivals exit with a name board, then walks with you along the pedestrian path to the NCC stalls in P1, a short distance in front of the terminal. Because the kerbside lane is reserved, there is no point looking for the car directly outside the doors.
Two details that rarely appear in generic airport guides:
- Airgest asks NCC operators based outside the Trapani, Marsala and Misiliscemi area to be accredited with its airport services office. If you book a driver coming from elsewhere in Sicily, it is worth asking whether this has been arranged in advance.
- The information desk opens in line with flight operations, according to the service charter. On a late arrival, keep your chauffeur's name and contact details on your phone rather than relying on the desk.
The logic is similar to the larger Sicilian airports, described in our Palermo Airport arrivals guide, though the distances on foot here are much shorter.
Drive times from Trapani-Birgi
The airport's service charter gives these approximate distances: Trapani 15 km, Marsala 15 km, Erice summit 23 km, San Vito Lo Capo 50 km and Palermo 90 km. Estimates for a private car in normal traffic:
- Marsala centre: approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
- Trapani old town and the Egadi ferry piers: approximately 25 to 35 minutes.
- Erice: approximately 40 to 50 minutes by the mountain road.
- San Vito Lo Capo: approximately 50 to 65 minutes.
- Palermo city: approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes via the A29 motorway.
Summer weekends and the hours around ferry departures can add time near Trapani port. For a day that combines several stops, such as Erice in the morning and Marsala in the afternoon, a chauffeur by the hour avoids having to fix every leg in advance.
Erice: road or cable car
Erice sits on Monte Erice above Trapani. The road climbs through a long series of hairpin bends, and visitors arriving by car stop below the walls near Porta Trapani before continuing on foot through the old town. The Funivia Erice cable car links a valley station in Trapani, on the SP31 at the corner of Via Capua, with the summit in about 10 minutes, according to the operator. Travellers report that it can stop in strong wind, so check the timetable on the day.
With a chauffeur, both options remain open: a direct drive to the top, or a drop-off at the valley station with the car waiting for you back in Trapani. The summit is often wrapped in cloud, which is part of its charm but can make the descent slower.
The Egadi Islands: timing the connection
From Trapani port, Liberty Lines operates hydrofoils to the Egadi Islands and Siremar operates ferries. Ferryhopper lists crossings to Favignana of roughly 30 to 40 minutes by hydrofoil and about 1 hour by ferry, with hydrofoils leaving from the Via Ammiraglio Staiti pier and ferries from the Viale Regina Elena pier. Winter timetables are reduced, and sea conditions can affect hydrofoil departures, so verify with the operator on the day.
Our suggestion is to leave at least 90 minutes between scheduled landing and sailing, to cover baggage reclaim, the drive and boarding. The same reasoning applies on the other side of the island, as explained in our guide to timing the Aeolian ferry from Milazzo.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Trapani airport from Trapani and Marsala?
About 15 km from each, according to the airport's service charter. Allow approximately 20 to 35 minutes by private car, depending on where you are staying.
Can a car pick me up directly outside arrivals?
Not in the lane facing the terminal, which is a limited traffic zone for authorised vehicles under ENAC ordinance 02/2025 TPS. Private cars use the P1 car park, and NCC chauffeurs wait in reserved stalls inside P1.
Can I land at Trapani and reach Favignana the same day?
Usually yes, if your flight lands well before the last sailing. Check the current Liberty Lines and Siremar timetables, which are reduced in winter.
Is Erice better reached by car or by cable car?
Both work. The cable car takes about 10 minutes from Trapani but may stop in strong wind, while the road is longer and has many hairpin bends.
