Wedding Guest Shuttles in Sicily: Vehicles, Timings and Venues
How to move wedding guests in Sicily: which vehicles reach which venues, how to time shuttle loops and what to confirm with the venue in advance.
Moving wedding guests in Sicily works best as a planned shuttle operation: a small number of fixed pick-up points, vehicles sized for the last road to the venue and not for the motorway, and departure times built backwards from the ceremony. Most problems come from three things: restricted historic centres, narrow access roads and the late return. This guide covers each.
It is written for couples and planners organising wedding and event transport in Sicily, and it concentrates on the guests, not on the car of the couple.
At a glance
- Indicative drives: Catania Airport to Taormina is approximately 65 kilometres, about one hour in normal traffic. Catania Airport to Noto is approximately 90 kilometres, a little over an hour.
- Where vehicles stop: in Taormina and Ortigia, at the edge of the pedestrian or restricted area, not at the door of the church or hotel.
- What to arrange in advance: the vehicles, and before that a check of the venue access road and turning space.
- Key rule: plan each shuttle loop on the full turnaround, loading and unloading included, not on the drive time alone.
- What to avoid: a single return departure at the end of the night, and pick-up points without shade for a summer afternoon ceremony.
Start with a guest map, not a vehicle list
Before choosing vehicles, list where guests are staying.
Group the addresses into a few pick-up points that a vehicle can actually reach and where a group can wait comfortably: a hotel forecourt, a car park, a square on a road open to traffic. In our experience three or four points are easier to run well than a door-to-door round, and guests find them easier to remember.
Match the vehicle to the last road
The motorway is rarely the constraint. The constraint is the final stretch: the lane up to a country estate, the gate of a villa, the climb into a hill town.
Ask the venue three questions in writing:
- What is the largest vehicle that reaches the entrance, and where does it turn?
- Is the access road paved, lit and two-way, or do vehicles have to alternate?
- Where can vehicles wait during the event?
Where a large vehicle cannot reach the door, the usual solution is a relay: larger vehicles to a transfer point on the main road, then minivans or saloons for the last stretch. It adds time, so it has to be in the schedule from the start.
For rural venues, send a map pin as well as the postal address. Country addresses in Sicily are often imprecise, and a pin removes doubt for every chauffeur on the day.
Historic centres: where a vehicle can stop
Several of the settings most often chosen for a ceremony are in old towns where traffic is restricted.
Taormina
Corso Umberto, the main street, is pedestrian. ASM Taormina, which manages the public car parks, lists Porta Catania on Via Crocefisso as open 24 hours a day and notes that its ground floor is designed for larger group vehicles. The second car park, Lumbi, is at the entrance to the town. In practice, guests are collected and set down at the edge of the centre and walk the last stretch. Our guide to arriving in Taormina by car explains the stopping points in detail. Rules for group vehicles change: verify with the Comune di Taormina or with ASM before fixing a plan.
Ortigia
The old town of Syracuse is an island reached by two bridges and protected by a limited traffic zone whose hours change with the season. Vehicles for guests normally stop at the entrance to the island or at a permitted point agreed in advance. See our guide to arriving in Ortigia by car, and verify the hours in force with the Comune di Siracusa.
Noto and the Baroque towns
In Noto, Modica and Ragusa Ibla, the streets around the main churches may be restricted or pedestrian, with rules that vary by town and by season. Ask the venue or the Polizia Locale where vehicles may stop on your date, and whether a temporary authorisation is available for the car of the couple. Do not assume it.
In every old town, allow for the walk. Stone paving and steps are part of the setting, and guests in formal shoes take longer than a map suggests. Elderly guests may need a closer set-down point, agreed separately.
Build the timetable backwards from the ceremony
Start from the time guests should be seated, not from the time of the ceremony. Then subtract the walk from the set-down point, the drive in normal traffic, a margin, and the loading time at each pick-up point. A group takes longer to board than most plans allow, particularly when the pick-up is the first time guests meet each other.
If one vehicle runs more than one loop, the unit of planning is the turnaround: the drive out, unloading, the drive back and reloading. A venue that is twenty minutes away is not a twenty-minute loop.
For the return, we suggest at least two departures: an earlier one for families and older guests, and one at the end of the evening. A single late departure leaves anyone who wants to leave early without an option, and a country venue is rarely a place where a car can be found at short notice. Agree the last departure with the venue, which will have its own closing time.
Guests who plan to drive themselves should know the rules. According to Italia.it, the national tourism portal, the permitted alcohol limit for drivers in Italy is 0.5 grams per litre, and zero for new drivers.
Arrival days and the airport
Guests rarely arrive together. Collect flight numbers early and group arrivals at Catania Airport or Palermo into waves, accepting that some guests will wait a short time for others on a similar flight and that the outliers need a car of their own.
Three points deserve a line in the plan this season:
- Etna. Volcanic ash suspended flights at Catania Airport in late September 2026, as reported by Sky TG24. Our contingency guide to Etna ash and airport closures explains how to plan around it.
- Motorway conditions. Read our note on current limits on the A18 and A20 before fixing times towards Taormina and Messina.
- Children. Italia.it notes that children under 1.50 metres tall must travel in approved child seats. Ask families for ages and heights, so that the right seats are in the right vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Do guests need to rent a car for a wedding in Sicily?
Not if shuttles cover the airport arrival, the wedding day and the return at night. A rental car is useful mainly for guests who extend their stay and want to explore on their own.
How do guests get from Catania Airport to Taormina?
By road on the A18 motorway: approximately 65 kilometres, about one hour in normal traffic. For a wedding, arrivals are usually grouped by flight time.
How do guests get back after the reception?
Plan at least two return departures and publish the times on the invitation or the wedding website. Agree the last one with the venue.
Can a car drive up to a church in a historic centre?
Often not to the door. In Taormina and Ortigia vehicles stop at the edge of the restricted area. For the car of the couple, ask the Polizia Locale whether a temporary authorisation is available.
Travelling with GIORIZZ
GIORIZZ provides event and wedding transport in Sicily with its own Mercedes-Benz vehicles and its own chauffeurs, and English is guaranteed on every service. For a wedding we ask for the guest map, the venue access details and the ceremony time, and build the schedule from those. The aim is a plan that the couple, the planner and the venue have all seen before the day.
